365 Movie Challenge | 040 | Short Film Round-up | January 21, 2012
[For the 365 Films Challenge I’ve decided it would be best to only count full length films otherwise short films would quickly escalate my challenge status. To remedy that I’m going to count these 9 short films (approximately 100 minutes worth) as one movie towards my goal of 365. All films are being featured at the 2012 Sundance Festival and can be viewed on Yahoo. Vote for your favorite and they might win a $5000 prize!]
Top Row, L-R:
Aquadettes (Drea Cooper, Zackary Canepari U.S.A., 2011, 10 min, color)
A meditation on life, death, and synchronized swimming.
★★★1/2
The Arm (Brie Larson, Sarah Ramos, Jessie Ennis, U.S.A., 2011, 9 min, color)
To keep up with social pressure in a technologically advanced world, Chance starts a texting relationship with Genevieve—a girl he meets at a yogurt shop. But tragedy forces Chance to realize that he was never in a relationship at all.
★★★
The Debutante Hunters (Maria White U.S.A., 2011, 13 min, color)
In the low country of South Carolina, some true southern belles reveal their more rugged side, providing a glimpse into what drives them to hunt in the wild.
★★★★ [I don’t condone hunting at all but this was a well-shot, interesting short film. However, make no mistake Debutantes, the animals aren’t “giving” you anything, you’re taking it.]
Middle Row, L-R:
Dol (First Birthday) (Andrew Ahn, U.S.A., 2011, 11 min, color, English and Korean)
A gay Korean American man yearns for a family life that is just out of reach.
★★★
Henley (Craig Macneill, Clay McLeod Chapman, U.S.A., 2011, 12 min, color)
Meet nine-year-old Ted Henley, budding motel manager and roadkill entrepreneur.
★★★★
Long Distance Information (Douglas Hart, United Kingdom, 2011, 8 min, color)
Father always told us, “Never talk to strangers,” … But surely we have to phone home sometimes?
★★★1/2
Bottom Row, L-R:
Odysseus’ Gambit (Àlex Lora Cercos, Spain/U.S.A., 2011, 12 min, color & b/w)
During his lifetime, each man plays cosmic chess against the devil.
★★★★ [This is something I’d like to see made into a longer film because his story is incredible but I’m left with so many questions. I like the metaphor they’re using and how it relates to his life, and I’d love to hear more details of his situation. The transitions between clips need to be greatly improved, though.]
Una Hora Por Favora (Jill Soloway, U.S.A., 2011, 13 min, color, Spanish and English)
A woman hires a day laborer for an hour and gets more than she bargained for.
★★★
‘92 Skybox Alonzo Mourning Rookie Card (Todd Sklar, Alex Rennie, U.S.A., 2011, 12 min, color)
Jim and Dave, two brothers who don’t like each other very much, are forced to come together when their dad dies in Kansas City. Dave is pretty sure he has an Alonzo Mourning Skybox Series rookie card, but Jim has other ideas.
★★★1/2
